First, a little background. “The Plateau” is located in western North Carolina in the southernmost Appalachian Mountains. On the plateau is Lake Toxaway, Highlands, Cashiers, Glenville and Sapphire. The WNC mountains here are ancient – 350 million years old! That alone should be enough to intrigue the most reticent reader. In addition to being the oldest mountains in the world, another fascinating factoid is that we also live in one of the only temperate rain forests in the United States. We can experience anywhere from 100-200 inches of precipitation a year. Don’t let that dampen your spirits, though, because this is a glorious place and every day just makes you thankful to be here!
